The Cann
River School curriculum is updated frequently and with the focus on individual
learning goals, and the emphasis on
evidence based highly effective teaching in our Annual Improvement
plans, we are looking to be continually be innovating in not only how we teach
but what we teach.
The P-10 Curriculum is based on The Victorian Curriculum ensuring our students are learning the knowledge and practices necessary for success in the world beyond the local Cann River environment.English, Science, Mathematics, Technology, Health, Physical Education, and the Arts are essential study areas in the school.; There is increasing emphasis on Personal and SocialLearning as a central plank of education and there is focus thinking skills, ethical capabilities and Intercultural capabilities within subject areas. Child Safety - the awareness and prevention of childhood abuse - is taught at all levels of the schoolICT is taught throughout the curriculum.There is a strong emphasis on Assessment for Learning, and student’s progress is closely tracked: there is a strong sense of collective efficacy in how education is delivered.In addition to our core curriculum Cann River P12 College also offer a range of special programs and activities to enrich our students' education.
The Victorian
Curriculum P-6
In prep to grade six a range of teaching structures are used from thematic approaches, to subject based teaching with a focus throughout of direct instruction at the point of need. Close assessment leads towards differentiated learning, accelerated learning and additional support.
English
Students are individually assessed
upon school entry so that their involvement in all English activities can be
tailored to each student’s needs. Ongoing monitoring and assessments ensure
that all students can achieve across the prescribed Victorian Curriculum
strands of Reading and Viewing, Writing and Speaking and Listening. Daily activities focus upon individual
reading, reading groups, story writing, conferencing, publishing, phonics, word
study, public speaking and handwriting.
Mathematics
In
Mathematics, the students follow the Nelson Maths Program and they work at
their own appropriate learning level, not necessarily their year level. This
year students are operating from Foundation to Year 4/5. Worksheets, maths
games, hands-on activities and ICT programs are also incorporated into the
Maths curriculum to ensure that all areas of the Victorian Curriculum are
covered: Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability.
Integrated
Studies In Prep – 2 the children participate in weekly units of work
that are relevant to current events and to the children themselves. Child Safety, Personal and Interpersonal
learning are major focuses throughout the year and special events, excursions,
weekly Buddies sessions and topical themes emphasize “Real Life” learning
opportunities.
Humanities
In the Victorian Curriculum F–2, the Humanities include Geography and
History and centre on the child, his/her family and the local area.
Science
From Prep to Level 2 the students
investigate their immediate and familiar world to identify and describe the
needs of living things and they use their senses to explore the world around
them.
English
The students are involved in a
range of activities that cover the modes of Reading and Viewing, Writing and
Speaking and Listening that are prescribed by the Victorian Curriculum. Activities
include such things as reading groups, story writing, word study, public
speaking and handwriting.
Mathematics
The
students will follow the Nelson Maths Program that is appropriate for their
year level with the use of other resources to enhance this program. This
program covers the strands laid out by the Victorian Curriculum which are
Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability.
Humanities
During Humanities the students are involved in a different unit of work each
term. This unit is designed with both the student’s interests in mind and what
has been prescribed by the Victorian Curriculum. Which includes the subjects of
History, Geography, Economics and Civics and Citizenship. Some examples of
units of work are Dinosaurs, The First Fleet, The Australian Government and
Explorers.
Science
During Science the students are involved in a different unit of work each term. This unit is designed with both the student’s interests in mind and what has been prescribed by the Victorian Curriculum. Which includes the following Science understandings, Science as a Human Endeavour, Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Earth and Space Sciences and Physical Sciences. And also includes the following Science Inquiry Skills, Questioning and Predicting, Planning and Concluding and Recording and Processing. Some examples of units of work are Electricity, Natural Disasters, Magnets and Growing Things.
Core subjects in Year 7-10 are English, Humanities, Maths, Health and PE and Science with many students in year 10 electing to study VCE subjects.
English 7-10
Each year the 7-10 English Curriculum is revised: considering the cohort, and areas focus, In 2016 and 2017 the year 10 students joined the VCE group. Areas of study for 2017 include: Short Stories, Novel Study, Poetry and Visual texts, Writing Folio, Persuasion, Media Texts, and Wide Reading.

Students in years 7, 8 and 9 complete topics according to the Victorian Curriculum Strands of Number And Algebra, Measurement And Geometry and Statistics And Probability.

Keeping An Eye On Light / Student Designed Investigation / The Dynamic Earth /
Chemistry: The Inside Story / Life Goes On / Invisible Waves / Think Quest.
Humanities Years
7-10
Humanities is a core subject for years 7/9 focus it incorporates
Geography, History, Economics and Civics and Citizenship. The Humanities course is based on the
Victorian Curriculum and includes the subjects of History, Geography, Economics
and Civics and Citizenship. Focus areas are rotated on a three year basis.

Wood
Technology
Wood technology is where the Design and Technology Victorian Curriculum is taught. Students learn basic making skills before progressing on to designing their own products to structured design briefs.
Food Technology
Food Technology is run in Years 7/8 and 9/10. Students learn various
methods of cooking, learn the functional properties of food and nutrients,
sensory and food terminology, and the importance of eating well and having a
balanced diet. They learn to independently plan and cook for a healthy life
style. They independently and safely produce effective designed solutions for
the intended purpose.
Health physical
& Sport education
Health Physical Education is taught P-12. Sport Education in Physical
Education Program (S.E.P.E.P) is taught in 7-10. There are inter house
competitions and inter school competitions at a cluster and regional level. A
rotation of team games includes- netball, touch rugby, AFL, table tennis, soccer,
basketball, volleyball, ultimate Frisbee, hockey, tennis, and badminton.
Group and individual Dance and Gymnastics themes are also covered.
Perpetual Motor Program (PMP) is run at the P-2 area and includes equipment,
floor and language work.
Interschool sport occurs once a term in years 7/10 and includes sports such as volleyball, cross country, soccer, badminton, athletics, basketball and table tennis

The Arts
The Arts Program at Cann River P-12 College encompasses a wide range of artistic practices including an annual School Production.
Primary AG Hort
In 2017 we have had a reinvigoration of the school gardens. Grade 3-6 students establish and maintain their own vegetable gardens, as well as class projects such as their Bush Tucker garden. They are also introduced to concepts such as the growth cycles of plants and how they fit into a broader ecosystem, and are introduced to agriculture and horticultural concepts.
By rotating subjects over two years cycle, and beginning in year ten, we
are able to provide a surprising range of subject choices.

sport program
Cann River and
interschool sport activities with other schools. There is a house system
consisting of Orange House and Brown House. Students compete for their house
during the year in the school swimming sports, cross country and athletics. The
primary schools complete in interschool swimming, cross country and athletics.
There are also sports and game days at Mallacoota.
Secondary students have opportunities to participate in interschool sports
usually once a term in sports such as swimming, volleyball, cross country,
soccer, badminton, table tennis, and athletics.
Students also participate in friendly matches with Mallacoota in soccer and
netball.

At Cann River we often work together in whole school activities; it might be the Mini Olympics with teams made up of Preps to VCE or a dress up day as a favourite book character for Book week.
